If you're seeking an authentic izakaya experience in Kyoto, look no further than Moshimoya. Nestled in the Shimogyo Ward, this quaint eatery captures the essence of Japanese dining with its cozy ambiance and a thoughtful menu featuring small plates perfect for sharing. Customers rave about the inviting atmosphere and the warm hospitality provided by the owner, who is notably adept in English, ensuring that everyone feels welcome.
The dishes at Moshimoya are highly praised for their quality and flavor. Standout items include the figs with tofu, which garnered a repeat order from one satisfied diner, and the beloved beef spring rolls that evoke a sense of home-cooked comfort. While some selections may run out by the evening, those available are guaranteed to delight. The community-style seating fosters engaging conversations, adding to the overall charm of the place.

Based on 186 reviewsMoshimoya is a charming, intimate izakaya in Kyoto that consistently impresses with its cozy atmosphere and warm hospitality. Customers appreciate the bilingual menu and helpful English communication, making it accessible to international visitors. The small-plate dining encourages sharing and offers a variety of flavorful dishes, though some items may sell out quickly, highlighting the popularity and freshness of the menu. The setting includes communal tables that foster a friendly, social environment. While the menu is limited, the quality of most dishes, especially unique offerings like figs with tofu, receives praise. Some patrons note the need for reservations due to the restaurant’s size, but overall, Moshimoya is recognized for its homey vibes, attentive service, and excellent value.
A great find. Very small, so reservations are a good idea. Isakaya dining (small plates and drinking) Owner is super helpful with English and the daily menu has English translation for the food items. A warm and very unpretentious place to go for a pleasant evening. Some tables are communal, so you get to have some great conversations.
Walked in around 2100 without reservation. Four hour seated immediately. A lot of things were sold out, but what they still had was delicious. Cover charge/minimum 1 drink necessary. AMEX accepted.
Really delicious food and kind service. We were seated right away, it was quiet and spacious. They had an English menu. Dishes are small and good for sharing multiple. The figs with tofu was absolutely fantastic- we ordered a second! Very homey/cozy vibes and a great price.
Such a cute, quaint, unexpected little restaurant away from all of the touristy spots. 2 ladies - 1 cooking, 1 serving. The serving lady was sooooo sweet and kind. The food was absolutely amazing!!! We ordered almost everything. They're small dishes, so order up! Highly, highly recommended (meant to take more pictures, but got caught up in the moment and forgot)
Very cozy izakaya. Limited menu. Both English and Japanese menu. I enjoyed the beef springroll a lot. Also had the fried tofu. The fried chicken was not so good. Great service and nice mood lighting.
AMAZING! The food was absolutely delicious and tasted so so fresh! We were absolutely amazed by this restaurant. A very small place run by two women, with a very warm and inviting atmosphere. We didn’t know what to expect, but we’re blown away! We ate the: Obanzai (very fresh selection of vegetables, delicious and subtle tastes), the fried chicken (reminded me of a beer battered fish, very good!) and the fried rice (very different than fried rice I’ve had back home in the US, but so delicious! I will miss this taste when I go back home) From the daily specials menu: the raw tuna and eggplant (very beautifully seasoned with a melt in your mouth texture) and the fried spring rolls (the spices almost reminded me of Indian cuisine—very deep and earthy—we really liked these). Drinks: the ume (plum) sake and the yuzu (citrus) sake. Both were smooth and refreshing—you almost forget you’re drinking alcohol! I recommend the ume for a smoother, fruitier drink and the yuzu for a more sour, almost hard lemonade taste. The atmosphere was quaint and warm and lovely and the hospitality was impeccable. I was very impressed with how quickly the food arrived, especially being that there was only one chef. I enjoyed being able to see her prepare the food. In case you couldn’t already tell from my review, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this restaurant if you are in the area. There was a constant flow of people, a mix of tourists and locals. I wish we had more days, so I could eat more meals there. Oh! And most important, it was very affordable. Our whole meal ended up being about $35 USD all together for two people. We walked out satisfied and talking about our meal all night. Give it a try!
We visited on an Obanzai special evening, which was a traditional style of Japanese cuisine native to Kyoto. The menu was small but great, we had most items, which were all fabulous. We would particularly recommend the shrimp - we had seconds. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was nice too!
Nice atmosphere, cozy. Healing at a rainy night. The menu has limited choices, but each dish has a very special flavor, all worth a try. Love the dumplings, each flavor is a surprise
